A Q&A review for the movie Quant

 Who really invented the mini skirt..? Mary Quants close friend Heather Tilbury Philips had some thoughts on that discussion…

Quant the movie was released worldwide on the 29th October 2021 and was premiered in the Abbeygate Cinema in Bury St Edmunds on the 9th November.

Myself alongside another student were lucky enough to be able to get a free ticket to watch the movie. It was truly beautiful and I really recommend anyone who is remotely into fashion or just wants to watch an inspirational story watch it! You will not be disappointed.

Once the movie was finished the audience, myself included got to witness a Q&A by Mary’s friend Heather.

Heather worked as a director of Mary Quant Limited in the 1970s, resulting in her becoming close companions with Mary Quant herself. This ended up helping production of the Quant movie with having more knowledge of what Mary herself was really like outside of her busy work life.

Heather answered many knowing and unique questions about Mary that not many people who aren’t close to her would know. The Q&A helped to allow us as an audience, a special insight of the person Mary was during her reign as one of the top fashion designers.

It was honestly a little emotional and inspiring hearing about how strongly Heather spoke about Mary. Clearly showing the effect the fashion icon had on her colleague and friend.

Heather answered questions ranging from;

“what it was like to work closely with Mary as a designer on a day to day basis?”

to which Heather answered;

“It was extremely stimulating and exciting however quite stressful, tiring and no two days were the  same!”

Out of all the many questions asked one stuck out that has been highly talked about on many occasions throughout the years and that question was;

“Who invented the mini-skirt?”

Heather answered this simply by saying “Mary wanted to design clothes that made girls feel more confident, she listened to them to make them shorter, shorter and shorter”.

Heather’s enthusiasm and willingness to answer questions was a wonderful experience to witness and I am very thankful that I was able to experience and listen to her answers firsthand!

The Q&A really made watching the movie more meaningful when knowing how much of an impact Mary had on others on an inspiring level.
